Social Media in the Classroom

I will share my real life classroom experience using social media. I have had an excellent experience using social media in my classroom and would love to share with others. I've researched social media as a graduate school project in the IDET program at the University of Utah and would like to share issues, challenges and successes with other teachers to encourage them to be as social networking friendly as possible. I'd like to share the benefits of edmodo, twitter for students (and teachers), titan pad and a few other classroom friendly websites. I would love to be able to help teachers set up with accounts and mobile devices to begin using social networking to enhance their classroom and grow their Professional Learning Network.

Collaborative Writing and Research Using Google Docs
Do you want students to work together on a project or just share ideas in real-time? Can you provide a way for multiple students to create, revise, and edit content all at the same time? Ever have trouble where a student takes a writing assignment home and never brings it back? Or can you picture the student that you don't trust to take the assignment home in the first place?

Google Docs offers a free solution that engages all students to collaborate together to share ideas and create content together. All you need is a Gmail account to get started.

Reviewing the new Common Core, I noticed that students in elementary grades are now required to create content online. This last summer I started to create and post some content myself and found it to be quite exciting. I tried to bring this excitement into my classroom by using Google Docs and also Wikispaces. We found that Wikispaces is a great place to publish the work and that Google Docs is better for the prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and overall collaborative approach.

My intent is to show teachers how to create and share documents in Google Docs as well as how students can go do research together or go through the writing process. Teachers will see the power of multiple students accessing the same document at home or at school to complete a project. Of course, this power extends beyond writing and the elementary grades.
