The Sky Ain't Falling – We're Rising! It seems that every time we turn around, there is another report about the abysmal state of American schools, further cuts in already lean funding, and some variation on China having more honor students than we have fast food restaurants. Recognizing that we face major challenges, there are also opportunities today that empower schools, teachers, and students like never before. It's time to explore (and enjoy) the possibilities!

Don't know where to start? Effective Lesson Planning with Technology
Do you have exciting technology in your classroom? Do you struggle with time for planning technology-rich lessons? Go beyond projecting an object with a visual presenter (aka document camera) or using an interactive whiteboard as an overpriced screen to integrating the technology into your lesson planning. Learn how visual presenters can add dimension and how students can actively use interactive whiteboards to learn. This presentation explores best practices for utilizing tools to engage students and accelerate learning. Examine sample lessons and discover how to examine them for effective technology use. A helpful checklist is used to evaluate tasks to make sure they are standards-based, engaging, problem-based and/or using technology to enhance academic achievement. Characteristics from the checklist are seen in lesson plans that successfully integrate technology. Learn steps to follow when planning to help decide when, how and if you will use technology tools. In addition, I will share resources to help you on your journey to a fully integrated classroom. Walk away with tips, strategies & more to help you successfully use your technology tools to accelerate student learning.

I've researched social media as a graduate school project in the IDET program at the University of Utah and would like to share issues, challenges and successes with other teachers to encourage them to be as social networking friendly as possible. I'd like to share the benefits of edmodo, twitter for students (and teachers), titan pad and a few other classroom friendly websites. I would love to be able to help teachers set up with accounts and mobile devices to begin using social networking to enhance their classroom and grow their Professional Learning Network.

Understanding student responses to online feedback and digital recommendations
What kinds of feedback are most useful to students? How do students respond to feedback presented in a digital environment? As part of a research team designing educational technology interfaces, we conducted a set of user design workshops that explored how students prefer to receive feedback on their work products during drafting and final submissions. The workshop also examined student preferences in receiving feedback in dynamic systems (e.g., online learning systems). Based on the workshops, we designed varying levels of online feedback, including conceptual feedback, feedback on error types, and digital resource recommendations while students worked on an essay writing task. Results inform our understanding of what constitutes adequate feedback during project drafts and final submissions, especially in online environments. In this session, we will present our findings about how students respond to feedback in an online environment and discuss implications for teaching.

This session will highlight the process we have gone through to identify the specific skills students need to use technology effectively in schools and to systematically teach those skills. We will also talk about collecting performance data to see if your student is actually learning those critical skills!

Class too big? Get Googled.
Because I had to teach 2 digital design classes with 40 students each this year, I had to come up with a solution on how to drive the class effectively in which my students could learn from my tutorials at their own pace, find resources, have their parents enjoy their work on blogs, receive emails from me (both parents and students), find resources and take quizzes on line, and still have my one on one interaction in class. The answer was google (google blogger, google gmail, youtube, google calendar, google documents, google picnik, google picasa and more. The platform I work on is Mac and my students are required to learn CS5 software, Final Cut, and all of the software that comes with a Mac. This is for Salt Lake Concurrent Enrollment and high school Art credit. I'm sure this style of teaching could work for any subject.

Geocaching: Mixing Technology and Your Curriculum
Geocaching is a worldwide recreational activity enjoyed by GPS users. It involves a GPS user hiding a "cache" and posting the exact coordinates so other GPS users can come on a "scavenger hunt" to find it. There are caches of all kinds for all ages and are usually placed in interesting locations in your area that you may not know about.
The concept of the game can be easily adapted as an engaging way to have students discover concepts and information in any curriculum. With a little work you’ve integrated technology, a little exercise, and whatever topic you want to explore, giving multiple ways to learn subject matter.
Use a ‘Multi-Stage Cache’ to test the comprehension of your students from the story your class just read; or perhaps you could have your students cooperatively solve a math puzzle to find the hidden container; or even peruse the ‘EarthCaches’ on Geocaching.com - caches from around the world based on various geology and earth sciences.

Using Prezi and Google Docs for Collaborative Curriculum Development
The presentation focuses on using Prezi.com as a format for collaborative curriculum mapping between teachers, in conjunction with Google Docs to create a shared database of teacher resources. Both Prezi and Google Docs are free, collaborative, and cloud-based. Using these tools in a synergistic way, educators can work together and share resources in real-time without the need to schedule face-to-face communication. The curriculum map we are developing in Prezi.com outlines a simple to follow visual representation of the Utah State Core. Each of the lesson summaries in the curriculum map have a resources section where shared docs are listed by file name and owner/creator. This allows any teacher that is added to the shared system access to a year-long curriculum flow with available resources to choose from. The strength in the project is the more people collaborate in it, the better it will become.

This is not a training on the "how-to's" of Google Docs or Prezi and assumes the participant is somewhat familiar with these programs.

A Hands-On Approach for Struggling Readers
Students with low reading abilities benefit from explicit instruction in phonemic awareness skills and encoding strategies. But how do we teach those skills in a real world setting? Practical, hands-on classroom activities that equip struggling readers with research-based strategies to improve their spelling, reading fluency, and literacy will be demonstrated.

Research has demonstrated that many struggling readers, including individuals who have dyslexia, have trouble breaking words down into letter-sound segments which, naturally, impedes their reading fluency and comprehension. But research has also revealed that these students “can learn these relationships with intensive phonics training” (Shaywitz, 2003).

Throughout the presentation, the presenter will provide an interactive experience where participants can apply the learned phonetic decoding strategies directly to reading activities and be given immediate feedback. Through these activities, the presenter will equip participants with methodology for their struggling readers that can be applied in the reading classroom.

The target audience of this presentation includes teachers, administrators, and family members who have a need to improve word-attack skills and increase reading fluency for their struggling readers.

From self-portraits to animated book trailers, learn to incorporate multimedia elements into classroom projects to engage learners and build essential communication skills.

The purpose of this session is to inspire participants to use the new Common Core standards as inspiration for exciting and high-level technology projects. While the standards are able to provide a clear understanding of what students need to learn, they do not tell you HOW the students should learn these standards. While each student is different, the desire to be engaged and to use creative outlets are common amongst them all. Pixie3 is the creative tool that we will use to engage learners and collaborate our way through the new standards.

Goals for participant’s session experience:

1. explore examples of student projects that blend Common Core Standards, critical thinking skills, and 21st century communication.
2. learn how technology can engage learners in work that reaches the common core standards
3. leave with specific ideas and strategies to use when they return to their classrooms.

Publishing Your Own Textbook is Easy
Imagine you and your students actually becoming published authors! With Lulu.com you or your students can publish paperbacks, hardbacks, textbooks, presentations, brochures, comic books, books of artwork or photography, calendars, yearbooks, portfolios, posters, and more, in both black-and-white and color. You can also publish digital media like ebooks, images, music, CDs, videos, fonts, and more. It is great for publishing your own book or for a student or class project. The publication can be publicly sold online for a profit (set your own royalty) or for no profit (only the printing cost). Or you can keep it private and get only a single copy for yourself or your class. The three presenters from Payson High School have taken different approaches. David Rockwood privately self-published a sport psychology book that is being used all across the nation. Brian Blake took an open source biology textbook, edited and customized it to fit his own class’ needs, and published it; It is being used by the Nebo School District. Linda Walter co-wrote a chemistry textbook to be used by her own classes, which is also being used by the Nebo School District.

QR Codes - Connecting the Material World to the Digital World
QR codes or quick response codes are popping up all over. Just look in a magazine, your junk mail or a poster at a store. Advertisers have jumped on the bandwagon, but how can they be used in education. Well these little codes connect the material world with the digital world through the use of smartphones. Put one on a math worksheet that takes students to a YouTube video on how to solve the problems. Create a scavenger hunt with learning tasks. Put them on the backs of books directing students to the authors website or a book trailer. Your only limitation is your imaginatioin.

The Dummies Guide to Designing and Teaching Hybrid Teaching Courses
Hybrid courses couple technology with innovative teaching practices to increase flexibility and engagement. Hybrids transform one or more face-to-face sessions into online experiences, reducing physical seat time without diminishing educational outcomes.

Because hybrid courses require significant re-thinking of teaching practices and understanding of new technology, this workshop will help you design your next hybrid course.

In Hybrid courses, the pedagogical focus shifts more responsibility to students, who do work online, either in self-paced activities (e.g., use of courseware for announcements, quizzes, asynchronous discussion boards) or small groups (e.g., discussions, chats/forums, projects/assignments).

Collaborative Writing and Research Using Google Docs
Do you want students to work together on a project or just share ideas in real-time? Can you provide a way for multiple students to create, revise, and edit content all at the same time? Ever have trouble where a student takes a writing assignment home and never brings it back? Or can you picture the student that you don't trust to take the assignment home in the first place?

Google Docs offers a free solution that engages all students to collaborate together to share ideas and create content together. All you need is a Gmail account to get started.

Reviewing the new Common Core, I noticed that students in elementary grades are now required to create content online. This last summer I started to create and post some content myself and found it to be quite exciting. I tried to bring this excitement into my classroom by using Google Docs and also Wikispaces. We found that Wikispaces is a great place to publish the work and that Google Docs is better for the prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and overall collaborative approach.

My intent is to show teachers how to create and share documents in Google Docs as well as how students can go do research together or go through the writing process. Teachers will see the power of multiple students accessing the same document at home or at school to complete a project. Of course, this power extends beyond writing and the elementary grades.

Using Technology to Teach/Revise/Edit Writing
Teach writing using technology. You have the tools you need to free yourself from squinting to edit chicken scratch on newsprint. If your students have access to a computer lab or better, you can have students type all drafts and save them on the computer. As teachers, we have access to these files in order to communicate with students ideas for revisions, then editing, before publishing. A color-coded guide explaining your suggestions, plus an electronic sign-up sheet, will free you from confusion over who next needs your critical eye. Use the technology you already have.

Lessons in Online Learning
Utah Students Connect is a consortium of seven districts (Granite, Davis, Tooele, Park City, Jordan, Murray and Nebo) that have come together to offer online classes for original credit to students in our districts. We would like to share the steps taken to create the online consortium as well as lessons learned and some of the pitfalls of online learning. While most of the districts had already offered or were developing online courses, SB 65 which became law on July 1, 2011, propelled us to collaborate in an innovative, collaborative way to offer online options for students. We currently offer the core academic classes in addition to art courses with more elective offerings on the docket for summer 2012. We would like to share what we have learned about creating and running an online program with our colleagues around the state, including course development and revision, teacher hiring, professional development and helping schools with the shifting paradigms in education as regards online learning. We intend to have students in the program available via webinar to dialogue with session participants.

How to Effectively Create Google Forms
With Google Docs, you can quickly create a form or survey, send it to students, parents, teachers, or staff, and keep track of the answers in one spreadsheet.

Since forms are filled out online, there’s no need to enter in results manually. Responses are collected and displayed immediately in a corresponding Google Docs spreadsheet which allows you to sort, analyze, and visualize the information.

You can send forms to anyone - even those outside of your school Apps domain. Respondants can access the form via email, a published webpage, or embedded on a site.

Forms also generates an automatic summary with charts, graphs, and statistics about your form responses and can notify you when new responses are submitted.

Visual multimedia for learning: What, When, and How?
Is a picture really worth a thousand words? Have you found yourself looking for digital images to augment your lessons and engage your learners? Should you pick a website with detailed pictures or abstract diagrams? In this session, research findings from studies on learning with visual representations will be used to engage teachers in thinking about what types of visuals are most useful for instruction, when they should be used, and how to support students in thinking deeply about visuals presented in the classroom. In this session, we will discuss how to reconcile and implement varied findings from the research literature. For example, research has found that abstract representations support knowledge transfer to new tasks but that novices need concrete representations that can be connected to background knowledge. The first half of this session will be an interactive presentation, in which examples will be used to facilitate discussion. The second half of the presentation will be a demonstration of how to use readily-available digital tools (e.g., PowerPoint and Google images) to create and modify optimal visuals for instruction and learning. Teachers are encouraged to bring a laptop equipped with PowerPoint and wireless access in order to follow along and try out hands-on techniques.

How can we support better student learning in math and science?
In this session, I will use multimedia videos and research findings to lead a discussion about student learning during online problem-solving practice in mathematics and science. We will discuss characteristics that sometimes prevent students from gaining deep, long-lasting understanding of math and science concepts, especially when working with computerized practice tools. I will demonstrate the features of a computer-based Intelligent Tutoring System that has been developed for geometry, and discuss how we’ve used this system to investigate student learning and identify problematic student behaviors and thinking during computer-supported mathematics practice. Finally, I will present practical implications from the research findings, both for geometry as well as other math and science domains.

Using Authentic NASA Data in the Classroom

One of the best things about NASA is that YOU own the data. As a federal agency, all NASA sponsored scientific data is made publicly available on the Internet. The trick is knowing where to find it and how to use it. In this session, we will look at some of the NASA online data nodes, the types and formats of data available, where to find free software that can read the data, and how to use this data to meet national science, math, and technology standards in your classroom. You'll also learn about NASA programs that allow you and your students to become actual scientists to collect and analyze your own data.
