Students with low reading abilities benefit from explicit instruction in phonemic awareness skills and encoding strategies. But how do we teach those skills in a real world setting? Practical, hands-on classroom activities that equip struggling readers with research-based strategies to improve their spelling, reading fluency, and literacy will be demonstrated.
Research has demonstrated that many struggling readers, including individuals who have dyslexia, have trouble breaking words down into letter-sound segments which, naturally, impedes their reading fluency and comprehension. But research has also revealed that these students “can learn these relationships with intensive phonics training” (Shaywitz, 2003).
Throughout the presentation, the presenter will provide an interactive experience where participants can apply the learned phonetic decoding strategies directly to reading activities and be given immediate feedback. Through these activities, the presenter will equip participants with methodology for their struggling readers that can be applied in the reading classroom.
The target audience of this presentation includes teachers, administrators, and family members who have a need to improve word-attack skills and increase reading fluency for their struggling readers.
