Because I had to teach 2 digital design classes with 40 students each this year, I had to come up with a solution on how to drive the class effectively in which my students could learn from my tutorials at their own pace, find resources, have their parents enjoy their work on blogs, receive emails from me (both parents and students), find resources and take quizzes on line, and still have my one on one interaction in class. The answer was google (google blogger, google gmail, youtube, google calendar, google documents, google picnik, google picasa and more. The platform I work on is Mac and my students are required to learn CS5 software, Final Cut, and all of the software that comes with a Mac. This is for Salt Lake Concurrent Enrollment and high school Art credit. I'm sure this style of teaching could work for any subject.
