Ann Smyth, retired teacher, author of And, Why Is This Not Cheating, director of the Center for Ethical Conduct and an associate member of Coalition for Character will facilitate a lively discussion following a short presentation and five-minute clip from the movie, The Emperor's Club, starring Kevin Kline. What are the effects when the focus is on achieving higher test scores at any cost? What do educators do when faced with the pressure to have evidence of academic excellence and the threat of job and funding loss if there is not success? We will discuss how shifting the focus from achieving academic excellence to a practical, character-based education can lead to more meaningful and longer lasting results.
